Shelby grew up in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe. At her high school Girls’ College, she studied Child Development as a Cambridge O’level subject and attained the highest mark in her exams which resulted in her becoming the first winner of the Child Development Trophy. Shelby went on to study at Varsity College in Cape Town and achieved a Higher Certificate in Event Management. She then studied two years of her Bachelor of Education Degree in Cape Town before deciding to carry on with her studies in Namibia for 6 months based in a fishing town where she ran a small classroom of pupils at a lodge overlooking the Zambezi River. She graduated with a Bachelor of Education Degree (Foundation Phase) in South Africa and has since worked at Silver Linings, a Special Education school in Harare. She attained her TEFL Certificate before coming to Malaysia. Teaching children is her passion and helping them reach their highest potential is her goal. Her interests include fishing, the occasional adrenaline activity such as skydiving, reading, watching sunsets and visiting new places.

Andreina was born and raised in Venezuela as part of a big, loving family. She pursued her college education there and earned a degree in Art and Design. When Andreina started volunteering in schools she realised teaching was her passion and went back to school for her teaching degree. Since then, she has continued her education by obtaining an ELearning specialist degree and a TEFL certification from the University of Toronto. Andreina is fully bilingual in English and Spanish, and has worked as a lead teacher in Early Childhood for the past 6 years, both in her home country and internationally in American, International, and Montessori schools.

Julie Roberts is from Florida. She was born in Jacksonville, FL., raised in Gainesville, Fl., and lived many years in Tampa, Fl. Julie graduated from the University of South Florida in Tampa with a degree in psychology and has since completed a TEFL certificate and has almost completed a master's degree in education. Julie comes to RAS with over 10 years of international teaching experience at the pre kindergarten, kindergarten and elementary school levels. She has taught in Albania, Kosovo, Turkey, South Korea and Mexico. She also lived in the UK where she worked as a Social Worker but realized that she truly enjoyed teaching. Julie also has many years of working with children in multiple areas of child protection.

Meaghan Roshetar spent the last two years teaching in international schools in Japan. She has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Special Education from Kean University in New Jersey, USA. She is highly passionate about Special Education and Early Childhood Education. Meaghan believes in providing equitable education for all students and enjoys the challenges of supporting individual students in all aspects of their learning. Knowing that she wanted to pursue a career as a teacher from a young age, Meaghan became highly involved in the Girl Scouts program. After graduating from High School, she continued to mentor young women as a Girl Scout Leader for an additional 8 years. Her interests include outdoor activities, cooking, photography, and reading. Her favorite part about living abroad is developing a sense of daily life in a new culture and exploring new places.

Originally from Belfast, Northern Ireland, Gail Johnston is an open-minded and enthusiastic teacher with over 14 years of teaching experience. She has worked in the International school system in Singapore and Malaysia for 9 years and loves being part of a multicultural working environment. Gail’s educational background includes a Bachelor of Education with a focus on Primary Science from Nottingham Trent University. She has been trained and certified in The International Baccalaureate (IB) Primary Years Program (PYP) while working in Singapore. In the classroom Gail promotes a stimulating, challenging and caring environment to enable each child to learn to the best of their abilities. She values opportunities to develop children's own interests, and believes that children engage with learning when it is thought-provoking, exploratory, hands-on and meaningful to the child. Gail is a keen traveler and sportsperson and is greatly inspired by her family, friends and colleagues.

John joins the Raffles community from his native New England, USA. He is joined by his wife, Caroline, and two most excellent high school daughters, Lucy (16) and HannahJulia (14). John’s career in education has spanned 25+ years and has carried him and his family to Brazil, Qatar, Thailand and now, Malaysia. John earned his Master’s in Curriculum and Instruction: Arts Integration from Lesley University. He has taught nearly all elementary grades, (plus older students) but is most particular to first grade, cultivating a genuine love learning, growing and working together. Helping students develop grit, and adaptability, communication and problem solving skills is only one small part that keeps John coming back every day. And, when not in the classroom, check the tennis court or local bike routes!

Originally from Long Beach California, Ashley is a passionate traveler, educator and outdoor enthusiast. She graduated from California State University, in Long Beach with a degree and credential in elementary education. She is currently pursuing her Master of Science degree, in elementary education from John Hopkin’s University. Prior to moving to Malaysia, she was working in a high-poverty, urban school in the United States where she was challenged to meet the needs of some of the nation’s most at-risk population. Over the course of those two years, she volunteered over 3,400 hours to the school/district, as an Ameri Corps member. Before doing that, she taught 3rd grade for two years in the Dominican Republic, where she continuously worked to meet the needs of students whose second language was English. Her experiences have led her to the conclusion that relationships are the foundation to any classroom. Relationships allow for academics to flourish by empowering students to take ownership of their own learning. She believes in holding high standards and expectations for all students because she is confident in their abilities to rise up and achieve. She is absolutely thrilled to be at RAS and is teaching 2nd grade this year.

Melissa graduated from the University of Texas at El Paso in 2007. Being from a military family provided her with the opportunity to travel the world. After she moved back to Killeen to teach 2nd grade for 4 years, Melissa decided to take some time to travel the world from her own perspective. Afterwards, she moved to Bolivia and taught 1st grade for 3 years at Santa Cruz Cooperative School. She learned Spanish and enjoyed taking a few months to travel through Brazil, Uruguay and Argentina. Melissa enjoys creating meaningful relationships along the path of her adventurous life. She is passionate about videography, kayaking and of course, molding lifelong learners.

Matt holds a B.A. in Theatre Studies from Yale University as well as an M.A. in Elementary Education from the University of Saint Mary in Kansas. Having previously lived overseas teaching ESL for four years in Chiang mai, Thailand, Matt has a developed a love for travel and exploration. At the same time, his past work history demonstrates his passion for building and problem-solving. Matt has served as a Scenic Carpenter for the Yale Repertory Theater; the General Contractor on an earth-sheltered house in Kansas City, Kansas; the Master Carpenter for the Summer Youth Theater in Lawrence, Kansas; and his current project is the design and construction of a bed and breakfast on the Big Island of Hawaii. Matt firmly believes that the lessons and challenges of building can translate into the classroom through Project-Based Learning and effective use of MakerSpaces to enable students to develop essential problem-solving skills and foster collaboration.

Cherie comes to Raffles from Auckland, New Zealand along with her husband David. She has three adult sons, a foster son and a foster daughter. Cherie and her family have enjoyed hosting children of different nationalities and have some ongoing relationships with people around the world. Cherie has a Bachelor of Teaching and Worldview Studies and worked for five years in a mainly Pasifika and Maori community. Prior to this, Cherie worked in a special needs school for seven years. Cherie believes that getting to know and understand a child is the key to a successful partnership in learning. She is particularly interested in helping students develop a healthy sense of self-esteem and self-management skills. Character development and self-responsibility are integral aspects of Cherie’s holistic approach to teaching.

Lisa joins the Raffles family from Portland, Oregon, USA where she taught 6th grade Math, Science, and Language Arts at a rural elementary school. She firmly believes that all students can learn and be successful in, and beyond, the classroom. She sets high expectations for her students, but provides an engaging atmosphere where students can build upon their existing strengths to become leaders and collaborative citizens. She enjoys being outside, surrounded by nature. Her favorite outdoor activities include camping, hiking, and running. To fuel her busy lifestyle, she enjoys cooking comfort foods and desserts. She also likes trying new restaurants and food. Lisa brings an upbeat and positive attitude to Raffles.

Ann McCormick has been a teacher for 10 years. She earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in Elementary Education from The Pennsylvania State University in 2009. She then went on to earn a Master’s degree in Teacher Leadership from The State University of New York. She has lived in Shanghai, Qatar, and Curacao where she has taught Grades 2-8. Ann loves reading and this spills into her teaching. She enjoys chatting about books with students, teachers, and friends. Harriet the Spy, Matilda, Violet Baudelaire, and Katniss are good friends of hers. Ann has a passion for environmental and charitable action and tries her best to be conscious of her choices and their impact. On the weekends, Miss Ann enjoys spending time with her husband, Lennart, and daughter Nahla.
