Mike Christensen is a teacher from South Africa. After graduating from the University of Witwatersrand with a Bachelor of Education, majoring in English, Mike quickly went to work, rising through the ranks within a prestigious school in Johannesburg, becoming the Head of Academics for Grade 9 within four years. The desire for new challenges and broadening his horizons has lead him to Raffles American School. Mike is passionate about developing the skills and art of theatre within young people, which he developed himself while acting on stage. Mike is excited about inspiring the students of Raffles to use the excellent facilities the School has to offer, from the Black Box Theatre to the Auditorium, and perform to the best of their abilities.

May was born and raised in Malaysia. She received her Bachelor in the University of Putra Malaysia, majoring in Foreign language (Mandarin). May is passionate about being a teacher and she has been Teaching Chinese as a Foreign Language for 9 years. She hopes to find out even more efficient and effective teaching method in teaching. She Believes that “One language sets you in a corridor for life. Two languages open every door along the way.” -Frank Smith

Lennart joined RAS in August 2018 together with his wife Ms. Ann McCormick. He is teaching Physical Education as well as Health and Life Skills to Secondary students. Lennart grew up in the Netherlands, where he lived until the age of 21. He was awarded a scholarship to study in Australia and has since lived in Curacao, Qatar and China. Lennart and Ann are the proud parents of their daughter Nahla, who was born in Shanghai in November 2016. Lennart believes that the main goal of Physical Education is to create lifelong active citizens. He aims to do this by providing the students tools to be successful. Teaching specific techniques and tactics, showing the importance of teamwork and sportsmanship, introducing them to a wide variety of activities and creating competitive and non-competitive opportunities are some examples of how he believes all students will enjoy being active. Besides enjoying teaching students Physical Education, Mr. Lennart is a passionate football player who also enjoys wave-surfing, playing pool and almost all other games and sports.

Lisa has been a licensed science teacher in various countries for ten years, which culminated in being Department Chair for Science in her previous position in the USA. She has a particular interest in the health and well-being of her students, which led to a Masters in Education in Pastoral Care, Guidance and Student Support with one of the oldest universities in Europe. This was completed as she trained as an International Baccalaureate Specialist in Biology in Singapore. As a result of her experiences with students from over 70 nationalities in Singapore, her thesis focused on researching good practice in intercultural education.

In her spare time, Lisa enjoys working with underprivileged children. Her first experience was when she was 19 years old (whilst studying her undergraduate in Biology) in a behavioral unit in a local school in Scotland. One of her most memorable experiences was when she traveled to Tanzania during her summer break to work with children through a humanitarian and education based society at the University of Aberdeen- for which she was also the publicity manager. Lisa has also been recently working with a children’s home in Johor and looks forward to further helping the local community. She also enjoys traveling with her husband (especially to try local delicacies), nature trails, photography, dancing and reading.

Megan Wood was raised in Altoona, Pennsylvania, USA. She holds a Pennsylvania K-12 Teaching License from Carlow University and has earned a Bachelor’s of Fine Arts degree from Slippery Rock University. She has three years of experience teaching internationally in the country of Qatar. Most recently she has been working at her local Junior High School as a Special Education Aide developing her skills to work with autistic students. She believes that merging trends, cultures, promoting diversity, acceptance, melding different subjects and recognizing individual abilities are stepping stones to having a balanced and thriving art classroom. Some of her hobbies are cooking, photography, listening to music and traveling.

Megan grew up in Boulder, Colorado but spent every summer and winter break traveling to visit her dad and step-mom in Singapore. She fell in love with Australia while on holiday and finished her university studies there. After interning at an international school in Singapore between her Bachelor of Arts and Graduate Diploma of Education, both from the University of Notre Dame Australia, she knew that one day she wanted to work in an international school. Megan has taught at a large school in the mining town of Kalgoorlie in outback Australia, and then migrated to her husband’s farm and taught K-10 Physical Education in the nearby town at a very small school. She comes to us from teaching at a very diverse school in rural Australia where she fostered a welcoming environment for all her students. Megan believes in a holistic approach to education and values getting to know her students and all their personalities, inside the classroom and on the playground. She enjoys spending time with her husband and young son, swimming and getting outside, as well as exploring new places.

Matt Tilford is a U.S. native who grew up in California, completed his B.A. in History at Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University, earned his M.A. in Urban Education from Tennessee’s Union University, and then lived in New York for a year before launching his career in international education. He has taught Secondary Social Studies and English in Venezuela and Myanmar prior to arriving at RAS. Matt is a passionate educator and lifelong learner. He aims to create a classroom environment in which all students feel welcomed, respected, and supported. His approach to teaching is organized and rigorous; he hopes that his students will feel pushed to learn and achieve more than they ever dreamed possible. Outside the classroom, Matt’s interests include traveling, reading, writing, playing the piano, and spending time with his family. He is married and his wife is also a teacher at RAS.

With a B.A. in Kinesiology, a Master’s in Education and a certificate in Secondary Social Studies, Josh has worked in schools in Shanghai, Singapore, Myanmar and the Dominican Republic. His upbringing and travel experiences have fostered a focus of historical and cultural perspective within his curriculum. As a big advocate for education outside the classroom, Josh enjoys coaching sports, developing community service programs and leading environmental clubs. In all aspects of learning, Josh’s philosophy towards education is simple: To educate is to empower; that we empower by showing others how to learn and we learn by asking questions, seeking answers and reflecting on the process. Based upon this ideology, Josh practices a project-based learning style that allows students to pursue questions that they are interested in while utilizing skills they have confidence with. He believes that by making learning relevant and focused on individual strengths, students become empowered to seek self-actualization.

As a Technology Integration Specialist and Computer Science teacher, Ken works closely with both students and teachers at Raffles American School. Ken helps teachers plan engaging activities which involve technology. He also helps both students and teachers learn skills to help them become more comfortable with new and developing technology trends, tips and tools.

After-school professional development sessions and one-to-one coaching with teachers are also some of the opportunities that Ken enjoys offering to assist the busy teachers at Raffles American School. As an Apple Distinguished Educator and Google Certified Educator, Ken has pursued annual online and face-to-face training from the engineers at Apple and Google about how students and teachers use technology to learn and achieve their classroom goals.

After earning a masters degree in Instructional Design and Technology from Emporia State University, Ken moved to South Korea where he spent nearly ten years teaching university students, K-12 International school students, public school elementary students, did corporate training for large organizations and teacher training for Korea public school teachers. Ken loves teaching in Asia because of the high priority many families put toward helping their children succeed academically. When not teaching, Ken enjoys learning for fun, reading, bicycling, spending time in nature and learning more about the history and different cultures within his countries he visits.

Mr Kho graduated with a Degree in Electrical Engineering from National University of Singapore. He has been teaching for the past 18 years with experience in the Singapore IP program, GCE O/A level, IGCSE and International Baccalaureate. He majors in Mathematics and Sciences. Mr Kho fosters critical thinking and problem solving strategies in his classes. A believer in holistic teaching, he facilitates the acquisition of life-long learning skills in his students. He likes to read and goes to the gym during his free time.

Born & raised in Montreal, Canada, Catherine has been teaching overseas for over 20 years. She holds a degree in Physical Education from Université de Montréal and a Masters in Education from State University of New York. She has taught dance, PE & health education in Indonesia, Singapore, Lebanon & Tanzania. Catherine teaches dance and photography and is also the RAS Curriculum Coordinator. She is an avid swing dancer, underwater photographer, dive instructor, cook and traveler and is excited to share her passions with the RAS community.

Rotimi receives his Bachelor’s of Science Degree in Physics and Electronics from Bayero University Nigeria.  He has over four years experience of work in International school. A certified Cisco professional and Certified Google Educator; Rotimi has worked as the Network Manager, Assistant IT Director and Technology Coordinator at the American International School Abuja. He has a passion for Technology Integration and Robotics. He received his Robotics training from the Carnegie Mellon Robotics Academy Pittsburg PN. Rotimi is excited to join RAS as the Technology Integration Specialist and he is currently the Head of Technology.

Nursyahidah Mohammed Suadi has been passionate about Bahasa Malaysia since she was very young. Her keen interest in Bahasa grew from being exposed to a variety of activities and competitions in Bahasa including essay writing and debate. These activities challenged her Bahasa skills and fostered her lifelong interest in the Bahasa Malaysia language. Nursyahidah received her Biology Science degree majoring in genetics from National University of Malaysia. However, her deep interest in teaching led her to join a children's development center in Selangor. With 5 years of experience of teaching children, Nursyahidah has been handling children with different characters and abilities which enforced her philosophy that every child is different and has their own specialty and ability. Nursyahidah believes that trust is the way to open up a child's heart and mind. Nursyahidah is excited to be a member of RAS's wonderful and dedicated faculty.

Steven was drawn to teaching after volunteering as a Peace Corps Volunteer for three years in Jamaica where he taught in a small rural school. His belief that life experience is vital for personal growth is demonstrated in his work at Habitat for Humanity and managing an eco guesthouse in the mountains of Ecuador. He has earned a Masters of Arts degree in Sociology and a Bachelor of Science majoring in Finance. He is certified to teach secondary social studies. He has eight years teaching experience in Viet Nam, Honduras, the United States and Myanmar. Steven believes in constructivist principles; that students construct their own understanding and knowledge of the world through experiencing things and reflecting on those experiences. Further, he believes that it is paramount for schools to teach to the whole child, which is why he has coached basketball, led Model United Nations groups and led students on service learning and cultural exchange trips. He is a sports enthusiast with special interests in basketball and cycling. Steven is married with two young children who attend Raffles.

Stephanie Seretti received a Bachelor's of Mass Communication and began her career path in business, where she traveled internationally promoting travel to university students. She then decided to go back to school to get a Master's in Journalism, allowing her to continue travelling the world. Stephanie found herself in Kenya where she volunteered at an orphanage, teaching English and helping out at a local school. It wasn't until this point that she realized teaching was her passion. Being inspired, she went back to school, getting a teaching certification in 7-12 English Literature and Composition. From there, she has since taught a total of 6 years in Colorado, Belize, Bali, and Vietnam collectively, and is now, of course, in Malaysia. Stephanie teaches Middle and High School English and leads the gymnastics program after school. Her philosophy in the classroom is centered around self discovery and inquiry. If students question and connect personally to the texts, they gain a deeper appreciation for what they are reading. She believes that students learn from one another and brings a sense of community to each and every class. In her free time, she is usually keeping active outdoors, doing yoga, reading, or traveling.

Rita is passionate about working with both students and teachers alike in the library. Her 20+ years of varied experience in 8 different countries includes work in admissions, journalism, as a librarian, a pre, upper elementary and middle school teacher covering language arts, creative writing and drama, as well as English and Social Studies in High School. With a Masters in Reading and Literacy and experience as a Literacy Mentor teacher, Rita enjoys opportunities to assist students in developing a passion for reading, writing, and poetry. She loves traveling the world with her family, playing tennis, yoga, making jewellery and writing.

Owen comes to RAS with 12 years experience, teaching the sciences to students of all ages in Washington State. Owen believes in engaging and challenging students so that they move beyond simple understanding and begin to see connections and relationships between all branches of science and ultimately, apply their knowledge synthetically across disciplines. He received his BS in Geography from the University of Minnesota. He has worked as a cartographer, natural resource manager, game warden and environmental educator. Working as an environmental educator opened his eyes to how much he enjoyed working with children; and also how vital it is that today's children gain an exceptional scientific fluency so that knowledge can inform their future critical choices about how we live in our world. He has worked in five continents, in places as varied as Antarctica and East Africa - where he was a Senior Warden for Uganda National Parks.

Tee Qiao Yuin has studied Chinese Language and Literature (Teaching Oriented) at the Nanjing Normal University where she earned a Bachelor Degree of Art. She also enjoyed an internship experience at China High School. She believes that education can change lives if students are immersed in learning. She enjoys teaching and learning with students, and, during her spare time, she enjoys reading the latest research on literature and education.

Jean has joined RAS from her home in Vermont, USA, where she was in her tenth year as a middle school special educator. She has been an international educator in Nigeria, Brazil, Pakistan, Japan, and Kuwait. Jean earned her B.A. from Wellesley College and her M.Ed. from Harvard University.

Jason earned music education degrees from Indiana State University and the University of Central Florida. His career path has taken him to public, private, and international schools in the US, Hong Kong, and the UAE. His experiences to date have made him a better teacher, dedicated to finding those unique educational moments that make a lasting difference in students’ lives. Jason tries very hard to find the right balance between the rigor, relevance and, yes, fun that music has to offer. When he's not composing music or uploading a wacky YouTube video, he enjoys vegetarian food and Chinese tea. He's traveled to over forty countries, but has no interest in signing up for a manned mission to Mars.

Erin received a Bachelor of Science in Food Service and Nutrition from University Malaysia Terengganu and is currently pursuing a second degree in Early Childhood Education at Open University Malaysia. Before discovering her passion for education, Erin worked as a Nutritionist in Naturalistic Management & Consultancy Sdn Bhd. Erin believes that education is the only pathway to change one’s life. For the two years prior to joining RAS Erin acted as an assistant principal for a local language center, specializing in teaching Mandarin as a second language. She has many years experience in teaching Mandarin to students of different backgrounds. Her students have ranged in age from 4 to 64 years old, and have come from countries such as Korea, Sri Lanka, India, Singapore, South Africa, Japan and Malaysia, among others. Erin is a Certified Trainer, recognized by HRDF Malaysia and CeDR Corporate Consulting Sdn. Bhd. She loves to teach Mandarin and enjoys seeing her students, not only learn the language but discover the associated culture and history as well.

Mr. Regan is new to the Primary School Physical Education program, teaching PreK to 5th grade. He is a true TCK (Third Culture Kid) who grew up attending international schools in Dhahran Saudi Arabia, Islamabad Pakistan and Singapore. Though he spent a total of 27 years abroad, he considers the Central Coast of California home. He graduated from Fresno State in California and worked in the Sanger Unified School District as a Physical Education teacher before moving back abroad. He has worked at the American School of Doha, Shanghai American School and Brent International School in the Philippines over the last 9 years as a PE teacher and coaching a variety of sports. Mr. Regan will be coaching the RAS swim team and the learn to swim program this year. He loves to participate in endurance races like triathlons, as well as camp, hike, travel the world and enjoy cuisines from different cultures.

Bella received her Diploma in TESL from University of Selangor. Bella has almost 4 years of teaching experience in education from teaching kindergarten, lower and upper elementary in Local, International and Private schools. Since Bella was a child, becoming a teacher was her dream; she loves teaching and watching students enjoy learning in her class.

When not teaching, She enjoys reading, singing and spending time with family, pets and friends.

Alex completed an M.A. in International Relations from Johns Hopkins (S.A.I.S) before starting a career in education. After teaching for a few years, he returned to school and completed an M.Ed. in Mind, Brain and Education from Harvard University (H.G.S.E). He has lived and taught in Canada, Europe, and Asia in a wide variety of schools and settings. His hobbies include cooking, reading, and listening to classical music.

David has mentored and coached children for many years in a variety of formats. After leaving retail management, he spent sixteen years in the New Zealand Police Force. His work with the effects of domestic violence, as well as the youth in the community, gave him a passion to help people succeed and led him to complete a Bachelor of Counselling. He has used this to counsel, guide and mentor groups of men and worked, for 3 years, as second-in-charge at a large 24/7 supportive accommodation facility. Dave believes that everyone deserves a chance and thoroughly enjoys building relationships with people, helping them understand themselves and their strengths better in order to succeed and reach their fullest potential. Dave enjoys a variety of sporting activities, including coaching and playing football, and is glad to be part of the Raffles team.

Carrie Geraldine Aralis received her Bachelor of Arts (Hons) majoring in Corporate Communication, as well as a diploma in Business from the University of Nottingham Trent. She is currently pursuing her Masters in Education specializing in Educational Psychology at University Technology Malaysia. Carrie's passion for music began at a very young age, influenced by a mixed heritage of Sri Lankan and Dutch, which ignited her passion for music and languages. Carrie has spent the last three years as part of the founding team for Raffles American School. She has years of experience teaching in both the local and international streams. Carrie plays various instruments and is a trained vocal instructor. She believes that music is more than just entertainment. To her, music is an art, a skill, a practice which is an integral part of our everyday lives. Music, to Carrie, is a more potent instrument than any other for education, as it affects the growth of a child’s brain academically, emotionally and physically. She believes that building relationships and bonds with her students is the most essential way of communicating her knowledge and experience to them.

Carrie O'Donoghue believes everyone is born with an innate creative ability, and that art is a process of exploration and discovery. Her role as teacher is to guide lifelong learners toward their creative goals. Through practice, artists inform our world not only about themselves but become the voices of their generation, the visionaries of our future. Carrie O'Donoghue received her Masters Degree in Fine Arts from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and a Bachelor's Degree in Fine Arts from The Minneapolis College of Art and Design. Prior to joining the RAS team, she taught at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago, as the University of Washington and at the primary level at the Ballard Community Center. She has a passion for arts education and after 30 years as a practicing artist, welcomes the opportunity to bring her experience and knowledge to a new generation of learners. Carrie has lived in and around the South Pacific and SE Asia for the past five years.
